The Importance of Stomach Acid
As most people understand, the contents of the stomach are very acidic. This is important for 2 major reasons. First, the stomach needs a certain acidic pH in order to activate enzymes to aid in digestion, especially the digestion of proteins. Secondly, the stomach needs a very acidic environment in order to kill off most of the bugs that find its way onto the food we are eating.
Many people who suffer digestive issues like burping, bloating, and acid reflux are experiencing a state of hypochlorhydria, also known as low stomach acid. If the acid is too low in the stomach, proteins will not be digested properly and many germs will not be killed. This leads to a feeling of food “just sitting there” and making people feel super bloated.
Supplementing with HCL will help to break down your food to release and ionize the minerals from the food. Your body starts to assimilate those minerals, adding to your mineral reserves, and the HCL production starts to naturally increase again. While you do this, the minerals you are now getting from the food will also help to balance your body.
When to Take HCL
One way to combat this is to supplement with HCL. The best way to take HCL is with digestive enzymes during a meal. It is best to take the HCL in the middle of your meal. Eat a few bites of protein, take the dose, and finish with the rest of the meal. This way the HCL is sandwiched by food and won’t hurt you.
You don’t want to take HCL on an empty stomach or away from food, ever.
Also remember to take HCL when you are eating a meal with protein. If you are eating a meal that is all carbohydrate, there is no need to take HCL. Instead, take digestive enzymes alone.
Start with one capsule and evaluate how your body feels afterwards. If you still have symptoms, increase the dose by 1 at your next meal. It is very important to listen to your body to find the right dose. Continue to increase by 1 until you get to a point where your symptoms are gone after eating. If you feel any uncomfortable symptoms of burning or nausea, you probably took too much.
You can also vary the dose based on how much protein you are eating. If you are eating none, don’t take any HCL. If you are eating a huge steak, you may need to take 3, 4 or more, depending on what is normal for your body.
It is amazing how much better people feel when they get their digestion straightened out! Be sure to see a Naturopath or alternative practitioner for more information.
